"$149 to design, then $79 a card?"
The design is paid once, not once a card. After that a card is $79, and less the more you take — $59 at five, $39 at twenty. Reorder the same design and the fee never comes back. A run of paper business cards costs about the same and does nothing.
"Do phones even support this?"
iPhone XS and newer read it straight from the lock screen with nothing installed, and so does effectively every modern Android. If a phone can pay with a tap, it can read yours. We'll test it on your own phone before I leave.
"We already have a QR code."
Then you already know how many people don't bother. A QR needs a camera, decent light, a steady hand and a wait. A tap needs a hand. Keep the QR — the tap is for everyone who was never going to scan it.
